What is the proper etiquette for asking a house guest if she wet the bed. Do you ask or do you just wash the sheets and not say anything?
Oh my! Let’s hope this situation isn’t something you run into every day! As fun as it is to have a house guest, it is always a bit stressful. Add the situation of soiled sheets and your enjoyable visit with a friend can end on a sour note quickly.
It is unfortunate that your house guest didn’t mention the slight, but perhaps she didn’t notice of was too embarrassed to tell you. Regardless, it is almost always advisable that the hostess not say anything and handle the matter privately. There is no reason to make an uncomfortable situation harder by further embarrassing the guest.
However, if in the off chance you made this discovery in the middle of your guest’s visit you will need to broach the subject. Not only is it best to provide your guest with clean dry sheets, it is important to care for your furniture by cleaning up as soon as possible. Making the change “secretly” will create yet another uncomfortable situation due to both you and your guest knowing the situation without acknowledging it.
Acknowledging the situation does not need to be an ordeal. Simply mentioning that you noticed the sheets were due for a change and asking if your guest needs anything else will acknowledge the incident. It also tells your guest that you already took care of the soiled sheets and it allows the guest to make a request for additional amenities if needed.
And of course, perhaps refrain from offering a night cap right before bed!
